Advanced Trauma Life Support

Target Audience:
This course is suitable for: FY2, CT1-2, ST1-2, SAS Grades and suitably trained advanced practitioners.

Aim of session:
The ATLS course involves a range of practical training sessions, including:
  • Initial trauma assessment and management
  • Airway and ventilatory management
  • Shock
  • Abdominal and pelvic trauma
  • Thoracic trauma
  • Head, spine and musculoskeletal trauma
  • Spinal immobilisation
  • Secondary survey, head to toe exam, patient transfer
  • Spinal assessment/x-rays
  • Primary survey x-rays
  • Cricothyroidotomy/chest decompression/pericardiocentesis
  • Application of pelvic binder

Learning Outcomes:
After attending this course, you should be able to:
  • Demonstrate the core principles of primary and secondary patient assessment
  • Rapidly establish priorities in trauma patients
  • Deliver care during the primary and secondary surveys
  • Confidently practice a wide range of skills required for the assessment and treatment of patients with multiple injuries
  • Review the difference in management and assessment of paediatric, geriatric and pregnant patients
  • Review the preparations to definitive care
  • Demonstrate the principles of ATLS based on a variety of moulage situations

Course Format:
ATLS is a highly interactive course, taught using a variety of practical techniques including simulated patient scenarios, skills demonstrations, group discussions and tutorials.
You’ll receive continual feedback and assessment throughout the course.
Before the course, you will be sent the ATLS manual. This essential pre-reading will ensure you get the most out of every session.
