Healthcare Science
Summary At ELHT we provide around 3 placements a year to students enrolled on Healthcare Science at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), allowing them to experience working life in an NHS Pathology Laboratory. The placements total a length of 50 weeks overall: 10 weeks between Years 1 and 2, and a further 40 weeks in Year 3. Applications are accepted from first year Biomedical Science students, and interviews are usually conducted during the second term. Applicants are interviewed by representatives from each placement provider and the university course director. Successful candidates will move from Biomedical Science onto the Healthcare Science programme. |
During the placements the student is required to gather evidence to complete the IBMS Registration Training Portfolio (reference copy available to view on this page), with the aim of undergoing the verification process prior to returning to the University. The portfolio is completed under the guidance of a training officer, and requires the student to follow a laboratory training plan, attend tutorials and meetings, and meet deadlines as required. Successful completion of this portfolio allows the candidate to register as a Biomedical Scientist with the HCPC upon graduation.
10 week placement
The 10 week placement at the end of Year 1 involves a rotation around the 3 Pathology departments (around 3 weeks in each): Blood Sciences, Microbiology and Cellular Pathology. This allows the student to experience all the disciplines before choosing one in which to spend their 40 week placement. The 10 week placement is academically weighted, and the placement supervisor (training officer) is expected to provide a mark for each student based on their performance during the 10 weeks. Students are also expected to start gathering evidence towards the Health & Safety and Equality & Diversity modules of the IBMS Registration Training Portfolio; this evidence will be assessed by the University at the beginning of Year 2.
40 week placement
During the 40 week placement (Year 3) the student is required to complete the rest of the IBMS Registration Training Portfolio. The portfolio itself does not carry any academic weighting, but the portfolio verification must be passed in order for the overall degree to be awarded. Alongside this, the student is also required to conduct their research project in the workplace under the supervision of a qualified Biomedical Scientist, as well as attending the University one day a week to complete other modules.
