Medicine
East Lancashire Hospital NHS Trust [ELHT] is one of the largest and busiest acute hospitals in the country and serves a population of 600,000. We employ 8,000 staff, some of whom are award winning and internationally renowned for their work and achievements. We treat over 700,000 patients a year from the most serious of emergencies to planned operations and procedures. Our high quality healthcare services are offered across five hospital sites and various community sites.
The Department of Undergraduate Education [DUE] at ELHT is responsible for clinical education and training of Lancaster University and UCLan medical students. ELHT is one of the largest University Teaching Trusts in the northwest. We are committed to supporting students from East Lancashire in their application to medical school regardless of their background.
The work placement programme was established at ELHT nearly twenty five years ago in response to a clear need to support our local students. Historically, students applying to medical school felt they had to gain "work experience" in a healthcare setting to strengthen their medical school application. However, this was perceived as difficult to access unless people had family connections. Interestingly, medical schools were far more interested in people gaining experience in a caring role rather than attending a ward round or assisting at an operation. We therefore developed a bespoke course to address these issues. Over the years it has gone from strength to strength as experts from various backgrounds have improved different aspects based on new developments. Hundreds of students have been through the programme with a success rate of 80-90%. Many have returned as students and doctors who have, in turn, participated in delivering and improving the course. We are in their debt.
Our work placement programme is free of charge
