Junior Clinical Fellows - Induction and Supervision

Induction

When you commence employment at the Trust you will be invited to attend a Corporate Trust Induction, which will take place on the Monday and Tuesday of your first working week. You will be booked onto this by the Medical Staffing Department. At this Induction you will learn all about the Trust and its values. There will also be time to familiarise yourself with the Trust’s Learning Hub and to make a start on your core mandatory training.

This is a good time to meet others starting at the same time as you as all new staff employed by the Trust attend this Induction.

Before you start any clinical work you will also need a Specialty/Local Induction. This means being shown around your area(s) of work and having the daily work explained to you, particularly your role. You should approach the Ward Manager or your Consultant for this.

Dr Clark meets all new Junior Clinical Fellows within their first six weeks and you will be contacted via your Trust email with details of this meeting. If you wish to meet with her earlier, please contact Dr Clark directly.

Supervision

You will be allocated a supervisor, who is a senior doctor working in the same specialty as you. If you are unsure who your supervisor is please contact the Educational Lead in your specialty. It is your responsibility to contact your supervisor as soon as possible after your arrival to set up an initial meeting.

You should meet regularly with your supervisor during your placement to review educational progress and to encourage reflection. They should also be able to guide you on the collection of appropriate supporting evidence on all aspects of good medical practice for appraisal and revalidation.

The role of your supervisor:
  • Help oversee your education, act as your mentor, monitor clinical and educational progress and ensure that you receive appropriate guidance on career planning.
  • Meet you early in your placement to ensure that you understand our commitment to your educational needs and establish a supportive relationship. At your first meeting, set clear educational objectives, and review these at subsequent meetings.
  • Discuss any complaints and / or serious incidents, write a reflection in your portfolio and include it in your annual appraisal.
  • Be your first port of call with any educational difficulties you encounter.
