Medicine Work Experience
The Medicine Work Experience 2-day programme offers students aspiring to work in the medical field an opportunity to observe medical professionals in practice.
The programme was established at ELHT nearly twenty five years ago in response to a clear need to support our local students.
Historically, students applying to medical school felt they had to gain work experience in a healthcare setting to strengthen their medical school application. However, this was perceived as difficult to access unless people had family connections. Interestingly, medical schools were far more interested in people gaining experience in a caring role rather than attending a ward round or assisting at an operation. We therefore developed a bespoke course to address these issues.
Over the years it has gone from strength to strength as experts from various backgrounds have improved different aspects based on new developments. Hundreds of students have been through the programme with a success rate of 80-90%. Many have returned as students and doctors who have, in turn, participated in delivering and improving the course.
The 2-day programme includes a bespoke Induction, a chance to meet and talk to Doctors, practice common skills, the opportunity to work with different team members including Nurses and Healthcare Assistants, meet patients, take part in simulated learning and attend a debrief session to feedback about your experience.
To apply for the programme you must meet/evidence the following criteria:
•Currently studying A-Levels at College or Sixth form within East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust’s local footprint
