Specialty - Surgical & Anaesthetic Services
Our Surgery & Anaesthetics Services (SAS) Division provides a full range of acute hospital and adult community services.
The division is also home to a specialist centre for Hepatobiliary, Head and Neck and Urological Cancer services.
SAS staff at the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital provide high quality surgical and anaesthetic services to adults and children, including 11 theatres, state of the art endoscopy facilities and an award-winning Critical Care Unit.
We are the only NHS Trust in Lancashire to invest in a Da Vinci robot. Since our first prostatectomy in 2015, we’ve extended the benefits of robotic surgery to colorectal and head / neck cancer patients.
Our commitment to Burnley General Teaching Hospital (BGTH) means a full range of general and specialist surgical services provided from 15 theatres.
It is the ELHT site which specialises in planned (elective) treatment.
In autumn 2016 we opened the £1 million East Lancashire Elective Centre with increased theatre and bed capacity.
Trauma & Orthopaedics opened the new Hip & Knee School at BGTH in 2016.
Our Ophthalmology directorate will be the lead service to benefit from an £18 million investment in BGTH Phase 8 expected to start work in late 2017.
Cancer Services are provided at both hospitals.
We were chosen as one of only five Trusts to pilot the 28-day cancer diagnosis standard to be introduced across the country in 2020.
